What's Free, What's Not
A subscription gives you access to the full text of Mercury News and breaking news stories, the comics, Dave Barry and Enter Code news stories. Selected stories and features that appear on the home page and on the newspaper section fronts above the "Final Edition" line are generally in our free viewing area, as are links off the right-hand column. Special pages like David Plotnikoff's Modem Driver, Dan Gillmor's Computing Home Page, Mike Langberg's What's New on CD-ROM and Greg Carpluk's Sitings are in our free viewing area. So are Warriors Tipoff and Sharks Center Ice, although the sports columnists are for subscribers only. The main story in Getting Ahead is always free, too.

The Menus
There are two pull-down menus at the top of most major pages. These menus can take you to any page in Mercury Center. Click on the menu to select where you want to go, then click on the GO button. Because of limitations of the Web, it is necessary to click on the GO button, which make it unlike any pull-down menus you're used to.
-Subscribe Button: Click here to find out how to subscribe. Eventually, you will be able to subscribe directly from this page.
-Help Button: Where appropriate, this button takes you to context-sensitive help. Otherwise, it will take you to the main Help menu.

Sections
These are the main sections of the Mercury News. Some sections, like Business, Sports, and News are divided into Departments. If there are departments, they appear as linked text below the main menu.

Services
Services that are not sections of the newspaper are listed here. These include our ten-year archive, NewsHound, and Enter Code. In some cases, such as weather or classified, these are wholly new interactive replacements for features of the printed paper.

Promotions
The right-hand column of section fronts is devoted to special links. These include related sites on the Web, special reports from the Mercury News, other information we think you'll be interested in.

News
The Mercury News is updated every day at 5 a.m. Breaking news is updated continuously throughout the day.

Reading stories
Mercury Center includes the headline and lead paragraph for each story in the paper. To read the story, click on the headline. Breaking news is free. To read the daily news from today's paper, you must be a subscriber.
